HUMAN CAPITAL : CAMTEL Bets on Youth to Build Digital Cameroon

The digital revolution can no longer be measured solely by the scale of infrastructure deployment. Beyond fiber-optic networks, data centers, and connected services lies another equally strategic challenge : human capital. Recognizing this reality, CAMTEL has decided to deepen its commitment to youth development through a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Higher Education.

Signed on June 3 in Yaoundé, the agreement marks a new step in bridging the gap between academia and the business world. Its objective is to provide Cameroonian students with access to quality internships, professional immersion opportunities, and hands-on experiences that will facilitate their transition into the labor market.

The initiative comes at a time when demand for digital skills continues to grow rapidly. Companies are increasingly seeking professionals with expertise in telecommunications, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data analytics, and digital infrastructure management. Yet the mismatch between university training and employers’ expectations remains a significant challenge.

By opening its facilities more widely to students, CAMTEL aims to help close this gap. Participants will have the opportunity to gain firsthand exposure to the operational realities of the sector, acquire practical skills, and better understand the requirements of a constantly evolving technological environment.

The initiative is also part of the modernization drive undertaken by the state-owned operator. In recent years, CAMTEL has significantly increased investments in expanding its fiber-optic network, strengthening data transmission capacity, and developing new digital services. With more than 15,000 kilometers of fiber-optic infrastructure deployed nationwide, the company occupies a central position within Cameroon’s digital ecosystem.

This technological expansion is accompanied by a growing need for highly qualified professionals. Network engineers, cybersecurity specialists, data experts, and maintenance technicians are among the most sought-after profiles. For CAMTEL, contributing to the development of these skills means preparing for the future while safeguarding the long-term value of its infrastructure investments.

Beyond the company itself, the challenge concerns the entire Cameroonian economy. The National Development Strategy 2020–2030 identifies digital technology as a key driver of competitiveness, economic diversification, and public sector modernization. In this context, stronger collaboration between higher education institutions and businesses is essential to building the human capital required for tomorrow’s economy.

By investing in young people, CAMTEL is going beyond its traditional role as a telecommunications operator. The company is helping to create a pool of talent capable of supporting the country’s digital ambitions. In the knowledge economy, the most strategic network is not only the physical infrastructure that connects people, but also the network of skilled professionals capable of unlocking its full potential.
