DOUALA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
(LVDE) – The renovation and expansion project of Douala International Airport is making major strides, with an investment of 95 billion CFA francs approved during an official presentation. This ambitious undertaking aims to transform the airport into a modern and competitive air hub in Central Africa.
Douala International Airport is set for a major transformation thanks to a modernization and expansion project worth 95 billion CFA francs. From 11 to 13 November 2025, experts—including engineers, architects, and financial partners—gathered at the La Falaise Hotel in Douala for a key presentation of the Detailed Preliminary Design (APD). This meeting, crucial for validating the technical and architectural guidelines, marks significant progress toward the effective start of construction.
Under the guidance of high-level specialists, professionals from Europe, Africa, and Cameroon examined every aspect of the future terminal in detail. Passenger flow management, baggage delivery, interior design, air conditioning, electrical systems, and commercial spaces were all thoroughly reviewed and displayed on a giant screen. This collaborative approach aims to ensure that every component of the project meets the growing needs of air traffic.
On the sidelines of the 136th Board session of Aéroports du Cameroun (ADC SA), board members had the opportunity to view a 3D model of the future terminal. Thomas Owona Assoumou, the Director General, presented a progress report outlining the project’s budget, of which 75 billion CFA francs will be financed by ADC and its main partner, the French Development Agency (AFD). The remaining 20 billion CFA francs will be covered by the State through tax and duty exemptions.
The modernization plan is divided into two main components. First, the extension of the aeronautical pavements has been awarded to the Chinese company CHEC for a total of 10 billion CFA francs (tax included). Work on this part of the project is expected to begin before the end of the year and will last approximately 12 months. Next, the renovation and expansion of the passenger terminal is scheduled for June 2026, with an estimated completion time of between 24 and 30 months.
Technical partners—including Apave, Ampi, Veritas, and TPF—provided recommendations to refine the APD before its final approval. The Chairman of the Board, Fritz Ntoné Ntoné, expressed confidence: “This strategic project will be carried out in accordance with international standards and will position Douala as a modern and efficient airport platform in Central Africa.”
The countdown has now begun to make Douala a regional hub capable of supporting Cameroon’s ambitions in air transport development. With infrastructure that meets contemporary requirements, this project is expected not only to stimulate the aviation sector but also to strengthen the local economy by facilitating trade and attracting investors. The modernization of Douala International Airport stands as a crucial initiative for the future of air transport in the sub-region. The project’s completion promises to position Cameroon as a leader in selective connectivity in Central Africa. Esther Grace
