In the telecommunications sector, where infrastructure quality has become a key factor in the competitiveness of African economies, CAMTEL has just received international recognition. The Fiber Optic Association (FOA), an American institution regarded as one of the world’s leading authorities in fiber optic standards and certification, officially commended the strategy led by Judith Yah Sunday Achidi at the helm of Cameroon’s historic telecom operator.
At the center of this recognition is one of CAMTEL’s strategic priorities: strengthening local expertise in fiber optic professions. The company has implemented a training program that enabled the certification of 130 CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician) professionals, an internationally recognized qualification. For the public operator, this capacity-building initiative is intended to support the rapid expansion of Cameroon’s fiber network while sustainably improving service quality for both households and businesses.
The initiative comes as demand for high-speed connectivity continues to rise across the country. With the expansion of remote work, digital finance, streaming services, and cloud computing, telecom operators are now facing increasing pressure to ensure network performance and reliability. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), internet traffic across Africa continues to grow steadily, driven by the rapid increase in digital users and online services. In this environment, fiber optics are increasingly viewed as strategic infrastructure for supporting Africa’s digital transformation.
For CAMTEL, the challenge goes beyond technology alone. By certifying its workforce according to international standards, the company also aims to reduce dependence on foreign expertise while promoting local know-how. The newly trained technicians are now involved in network deployment, maintenance, operations, and FTTH (Fiber To The Home) connections, which have become essential in urban areas with growing digital demand. CAMTEL also says it intends to shorten installation timelines and improve customer experience, an area that has faced criticism in recent years.
The recognition awarded to Judith Yah Sunday Achidi further strengthens the modernization strategy implemented within the state-owned company over the past several years. In an environment shaped by rising competition from private operators and the rapid growth of digital services, CAMTEL is seeking to reposition its image around service quality and technological innovation. For Cameroonian authorities, the development of digital infrastructure remains a major driver of economic competitiveness and digital inclusion.
Through this international distinction, CAMTEL now aims to consolidate its role as a central player in Cameroon’s digital transformation. By investing in certified training and upgrading its infrastructure, the public operator intends to demonstrate that human capital remains a decisive factor in building a high-quality and sustainable telecommunications network.
