At a time when road accidents continue to represent a major challenge in Cameroon, digital technology is gradually emerging as a powerful prevention tool. During the National Road Safety Forum in Yaoundé, the MTN Cameroon–BeSafe consortium received the Road Safety Award, a distinction recognizing its commitment to safer mobility through technological innovation.
The award highlights Ym@ne Driver, an intelligent solution designed to anticipate dangerous driving behavior. Implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, the technology relies on onboard cameras and AI-powered analytics systems. The device continuously monitors both the driver’s condition and driving environment to detect signs of fatigue, distraction, speeding, and non-compliance with safety regulations. Whenever risky behavior is identified, real-time alerts are immediately triggered to help prevent potential accidents.
The initiative comes at a particularly concerning time. According to statistics released by Cameroonian authorities and international organizations, thousands of road accidents are recorded every year across the country. The World Health Organization also notes that road traffic accidents remain among the leading causes of death in Africa, particularly among young adults. Beyond the human toll, road insecurity also generates significant economic losses for governments and transport companies alike.
For MTN Cameroon and BeSafe, the initial results demonstrate the effectiveness of the system. More than 500 vehicles are reportedly equipped with the solution without recording a single fatal accident to date. The data collected has also helped identify and correct numerous dangerous driving behaviors. For transport operators, the platform additionally provides operational benefits, including real-time vehicle tracking, route optimization, improved fleet management, and reduced costs linked to road incidents.
“This recognition strengthens our commitment to using digital technology to address major societal challenges,” said the CEO of MTN Cameroon following the ceremony. Franck Gérard Kom, General Manager of the Enterprise Business Unit at the telecom operator, echoed the same ambition, stressing that technology can now play a decisive role in accident prevention and in the modernization of the transport sector.
Beyond this distinction, MTN Cameroon is reaffirming its ambition to expand its footprint in high-impact digital services. In a country marked by rapid urbanization and a growing vehicle fleet, smart mobility solutions are increasingly emerging as a strategic market. Through Ym@ne Driver, the telecom operator and its partner BeSafe aim to demonstrate that artificial intelligence can become a concrete driver of infrastructure and mobility transformation in Cameroon.
