Amid the high-level atmosphere surrounding the 61st Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank, the distinction ceremony held in Kintélé cast a spotlight on key figures who often operate behind the scenes of institutional power. Among them was Thierry Junior Hot, Chief of Staff to the President of the AfDB Group, who received the insignia of Knight in the Congolese Order of Merit, further strengthening a career already marked by growing international recognition.
This is not the first distinction for the 52-year-old Cameroonian communications strategist. In July 2025, he had already been elevated to the rank of Knight in the National Order of Merit of Mauritania by President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, in recognition of his role in the campaign that led to the election of Sidi Ould Tah as President of the African Development Bank. The double recognition underscores the increasingly transnational dimension of his professional trajectory.
Before joining the pan-African institution in September 2025, Thierry Hot built his reputation within international media circles, notably at the BBC and Africa24, where he developed expertise in strategic communication and public diplomacy. His appointment to the AfDB came as part of the restructuring of the executive team surrounding the new President of the Group, Sidi Ould Tah, amid efforts to redefine the institution’s strategic priorities.
In a statement released after the ceremony, the recipient expressed visible yet measured emotion, describing the distinction as one received “with sincere emotion.” He praised the confidence placed in him by the President of the African Development Bank and highlighted the decisive role the latter played in convincing him to join the institution, portraying a relationship built on persuasion and conviction.
At the heart of his responsibilities, Thierry Junior Hot oversees a sensitive operational structure situated at the crossroads of communication, institutional coordination and dialogue with strategic partners. He describes his role as one carried out “discreetly,” ensuring continuity between the presidency, technical teams and external stakeholders within the complex decision-making architecture typical of major multilateral institutions.
The Brazzaville ceremony also provided an opportunity for a more personal reflection. Thierry Hot dedicated the distinction to his family, acknowledging the constraints imposed by such a demanding position, while also paying tribute to his team, which he described as an essential pillar in the day-to-day management of presidential office responsibilities.
In a more political tone, his message concluded with a distinctly pan-African vision. He stressed that honors only carry meaning if they reinforce commitment, calling on his generation to demonstrate “courage, clarity and consistency” in shaping Africa’s future.
Beyond the individual recognition, the distinction highlights the growing importance of hybrid profiles — combining strategic communication, institutional diplomacy and crisis management — within major African organizations. Within the African Development Bank ecosystem, such functions are increasingly becoming central to the institution’s governance and continental influence.
