In Maroua, at the heart of a region regularly affected by water scarcity, BGFIBank Cameroon has initiated a high-impact social project. Named “Wells of Hope,” the program seeks to build 50 drinking water boreholes across several localities in the Far North, one of the areas most exposed to the combined effects of climate change and population pressure.
In this part of the country, access to water remains a daily challenge. According to UNICEF and World Bank data, nearly half of rural populations in northern Cameroon face seasonal shortages, often forcing residents to travel several kilometers to access water. This structural deficit increases health risks and hampers local economic activities, particularly agriculture and livestock farming.
It is within this context that BGFIBank Cameroon’s initiative takes shape, aiming to provide a concrete and sustainable solution. Beyond improving access to safe drinking water, the project seeks to enhance hygiene conditions, reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases, and significantly improve the daily lives of beneficiary communities. The infrastructure will be implemented in collaboration with local authorities and communities to ensure ownership and long-term sustainability.
This program is part of the Group’s corporate social responsibility strategy, which includes numerous initiatives supporting human development in Cameroon. Over the years, BGFIBank has been active in several sectors, particularly education, through the rehabilitation of schools and universities, as well as the development of modern learning infrastructure. In agriculture, the bank has also supported production and training initiatives, contributing to food security.
The launch of the “Wells of Hope” project comes at a symbolic moment, alongside World Water Day, which highlights the urgency of equitable access to this essential resource. According to the United Nations, more than 2 billion people worldwide still lack access to safely managed drinking water, a challenge that is particularly acute in Sub-Saharan Africa.
This initiative also coincides with the celebration of 15 years of BGFIBank Cameroon’s presence, marked by a consistent commitment to combining economic performance with social impact. For the institution, it demonstrates that the private sector can play a decisive role in addressing development challenges.
Following Maroua, the program will continue in Garoua before expanding to other targeted localities. Through this project, BGFIBank Cameroon aims to sustainably transform living conditions and strengthen community resilience to climate challenges.
