(LVDE) – The Ministry of Water and Energy has released a list of companies shortlisted to update Cameroon’s National Master Plan for Electricity Generation, Transmission, and Distribution, as part of a strategic reform supported by the World Bank.
Amid steadily growing electricity demand in Cameroon, the Ministry of Water and Energy recently announced the shortlisting of about ten companies to update the National Master Plan for electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. This initiative, coordinated by the Electricity Sector Reform Program Coordination Unit (PRSE), seeks to establish an energy planning framework adapted to the country’s current and future challenges.
Funded by the International Development Association (IDA), a branch of the World Bank, this mission aims to produce an up-to-date energy planning tool to guide investment in a sector undergoing major transformation. Updating the master plan is essential to address the rising energy demand and to promote diversification of the national energy mix.
Among the shortlisted firms are several well-known players in the energy engineering field. These include Électricité de France (EDF), a global leader in the power industry, alongside IED Consult & HB Consults, the Artelia & Nodalis consortium, and other groups such as Ginger & Sofreco & Genex, and MRC & Seureca. The selection of the consulting firm in charge of the mission will follow the Quality and Cost-Based Selection (QCBS) method, ensuring that the choice is based on a comprehensive technical proposal.
This study is of critical importance. It will integrate new parameters related to energy transition, population growth, rural electrification, and the development of renewable energy sources into the master plan. Cameroon faces several challenges, including limited access to electricity in rural areas where demand is often underestimated. The integration of hydropower, solar, and wind energy will be key to meeting these growing needs.
The resulting strategic document will serve as a roadmap to guide future public and private investments in Cameroon’s power sector. The government has pledged to improve access to electricity and ensure the sustainability of the energy system—an essential condition for supporting the country’s economic development.
With a rapidly growing population and accelerated urbanization, Cameroon must prepare to face unprecedented energy challenges. Updating the national master plan represents a step in the right direction, reflecting the country’s commitment to a sustainable and responsible energy transition. The outcomes of this mission are also expected to enhance coordination among sector stakeholders to ensure a collective and effective response to energy challenges.
This initiative is set to transform Cameroon’s energy landscape by modernizing existing infrastructure and integrating innovative solutions. Cameroon is thus positioning itself to meet the challenges of tomorrow while equipping itself with the tools necessary to achieve a successful energy transition.
