(LVDE) – On November 20, 2025, Cameroon Railway (Camrail) demonstrated its commitment to railway safety during the 8th Railway Safety Days. Organized under the theme “Artificial Intelligence for Railway Safety : Opportunities and Challenges”, the event highlighted the growing importance of AI in optimizing railway operations.
In a context where rail transport plays a vital role in economic development, Cameroon Railway (Camrail) opened a decisive chapter in its history on November 20, 2025. The company, a leader in the railway sector in Cameroon, hosted the 8th edition of the Railway Safety Days, focusing on a major contemporary issue : the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into public transport safety. Hamadou Bakary, Camrail’s Deputy Managing Director, emphasized the pressing need for technological tools to cope with rising traffic and the modernization of ageing infrastructure.
For Camrail, the railway is more than just a means of transport; it represents a crucial link between regions and their populations. Every train in operation carries hopes and economic exchanges, underscoring the vital importance of safety. With the RailGuard program, the company is leveraging AI to monitor railway networks. Sensors installed on infrastructure and trains generate precise data on various parameters, ranging from temperature to rail humidity. This stream of information is processed by intelligent algorithms that turn raw data into valuable insights.
The emergence of big data and cloud computing is revolutionizing the management of railway networks. By cross-referencing real-time data with incident history, continuous analysis helps anticipate failures before they lead to major incidents. This paradigm shift not only improves service availability but also boosts passenger confidence by reducing delays.
In 2024, Camrail recorded 266 safety-related incidents, prompting the company to stress the need for a proactive approach. It has invested in cutting-edge equipment and digitalized its operations. Awareness campaigns have also been conducted among local communities to prevent harmful behaviors such as sabotage.
The impact of AI goes beyond technology: it transforms the way safety is managed. By providing a clear picture of risks, AI helps prioritize actions according to their level of urgency. In emergencies, teams have access to precise information, speeding up decision-making.
Ultimately, the integration of artificial intelligence into railway safety represents far more than operational modernization. It reinforces Camrail’s commitment to providing safe and reliable services. The Railway Safety Days are part of ongoing efforts to raise awareness among industry stakeholders about best practices. Camrail positions itself as a leader determined to embrace the future with boldness and innovation, ensuring a rail transport system that is not only efficient but also secure.
