(LVDE) — Douala International Airport is entering a new phase of modernization of its airport infrastructure. The business consortium Venta/Metag Insaat A.S Group has been selected to carry out works to bring the runway and taxiways into compliance with international standards, in a context of improving the financial and operational performance of Aéroports du Cameroun.
The modernization project at Douala International Airport is gaining momentum following the selection of the Venta/Metag Insaat A.S Group consortium. The company will have seven months to carry out safety and rehabilitation works on aircraft movement areas, for an investment estimated at 1.5 billion FCFA, financed by Aéroports du Cameroun (ADC), the public entity responsible for managing the country’s airport infrastructure.
The contract was officially validated on February 20, 2026, by the Director General of ADC, Thomas Owona Assoumou, following a tender launched in December 2025. The main objective is to align airport facilities with international aviation safety standards while improving the fluidity of logistics operations on the platform. The works will notably cover runway end safety zones, improvement of runway lighting systems, and rehabilitation of certain airfield pavements.
Technical interventions include the construction of safety areas at thresholds 12 and 30 of the runway, in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization standards. The teams will also update runway markings, install landing guidance lighting systems, and rehabilitate service roads used by maintenance and baggage handling vehicles. Rehabilitation will also extend to areas near aircraft parking stands to enhance operational safety.
This project is part of a broader airport certification plan initiated in 2023 with the development of a Corrective Action Plan aimed at strengthening compliance with international standards. Airport authorities are working with several technical partners to clarify institutional responsibilities and accelerate the certification process for the airport serving Cameroon’s economic capital.
This modernization comes in a favorable financial context for ADC. In 2024, passenger traffic reached 1.7 million travelers, representing a 5.4% increase. At the same time, the company recorded a net profit of 9.2 billion FCFA, up 104% compared to 2023. These results provide investment capacity for the continuous upgrading of national air transport infrastructure. Raphael Mforlem
