(LVDE) – The foundation stone of this facility was laid on October 3, 2025, in Meyo, Yaoundé IV subdivision, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute. This event marks a turning point in local medicine production in Cameroon and aims to strengthen the country’s health independence while improving access to healthcare.
On October 3, 2025, Meyo, in Yaoundé IV subdivision, hosted the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a pharmaceutical factory dedicated to the production of medicines and medical devices. Presided over by Prime Minister Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute, the ceremony symbolizes a significant step forward in Cameroon’s local pharmaceutical production. This project, born of a partnership with Yicheng Pharmaceutical Group Fabrication Co. LTD, is part of a strategic effort to ensure the country’s health sovereignty.
The creation of this facility represents a crucial challenge for both Cameroon and the Cemac sub-region. Currently, nearly 95% of medical needs are met through imports, underscoring a problematic dependency. With this plant, the country aims to reduce its reliance on imports and improve access to essential medicines. The project seeks to strengthen local production in order to ensure a competitive supply on the market.
At the heart of this initiative is Mbe Idriss Confiance, Inspector of Financial Administrations and a rising figure in Cameroon’s industrialization. A dynamic young entrepreneur, he successfully rallied partners and institutions around the vision of an industrial Cameroon. His determination and patriotism illustrate the commitment of youth to the country’s economic transformation. Seen as a role model for the new generation, Mbe Idriss Confiance demonstrates that young people can play a key role in industrial development.

The impact of this plant will extend beyond the production of medicines. It aligns with the National Development Strategy (SND 30) and the National Health Development Program (PNDS). The project is expected to significantly reduce imports and lower supply costs, while boosting the local industrial fabric. Forecasts indicate that the plant’s first phase will create between 800 and 1,000 direct jobs, with the potential to exceed 3,000 in the medium term. Additionally, thousands of indirect jobs are expected to emerge in supply chains, distribution, and transportation.
The Yicheng plant will not only be a production site; it also represents a technological upgrade for the country. Through strategic partnerships and knowledge transfer, the initiative will contribute to training skilled human resources, essential for the development of the local pharmaceutical industry. It will also foster greater regional integration by addressing the growing demand for pharmaceutical products within the CEMAC region.
The groundbreaking ceremony brought together a wide range of personalities, from political leaders to economic and diplomatic stakeholders. All bore witness to this historic milestone, which illustrates the Head of State’s vision for a modern and self-reliant Cameroon in public health. By launching this ambitious project, the country aspires to guarantee its population access to quality medicines at affordable prices.
In short, the construction of this pharmaceutical plant by Yicheng Group marks a decisive step in Cameroon’s quest for health independence. With the engagement of young leaders such as Mbe Idriss Confiance, this initiative paves the way for a promising future in the healthcare sector while reinforcing the foundations of sustainable industrial development. Cameroon is thus moving towards pharmaceutical independence, with the hope of a future in which every citizen has access to quality and affordable healthcare.
