(LVDE) — As part of its Ambition 2025 strategy, MTN Cameroon organized the MTN Skills Academy program at the University of Dschang, providing 1,792 young people with practical and certified training to strengthen their digital skills and enhance their employability in the digital economy.
Dschang, a university city in Cameroon, recently hosted a major initiative in digital inclusion. MTN Cameroon, in partnership with the University of Dschang, launched the MTN Skills Academy, a program designed to equip young people with essential skills for the digital economy. This initiative is part of the operator’s “Ambition 2025” strategy, which aims to empower communities and build Africa’s largest digital platform.
The program brought together 1,792 participants, including students, recent graduates, and young entrepreneurs, and issued 1,430 certificates at the conclusion of the training sessions. Participants were trained in basic digital literacy, cybersecurity, professional communication, and digital entrepreneurship. These modules allowed them to acquire skills immediately applicable to their academic and professional pursuits, enhancing their employability in an increasingly digital economy.
Wanda Matandela, CEO of MTN Cameroon, emphasized the significance of the initiative: “Through the MTN Skills Academy, we provide young people with the tools they need to become key players in the digital economy. Our commitment is to create opportunities and support Cameroonian youth on the path to employability, innovation, and entrepreneurship.”
For the University of Dschang, the partnership serves as a strategic link between academia and market needs. Professor Bernard Guimdo Dongmo, Vice-Rector in charge of Cooperation and Corporate Relations, stated: “The University is delighted to collaborate with MTN Cameroon to promote the development of digital skills. Initiatives like this prepare students to meet the demands of the digital economy and fully seize professional opportunities.”
Participants expressed enthusiasm about the training they received. Oscar, a student, said: “Before this program, I mainly used digital tools to communicate and entertain myself. Thanks to the MTN Skills Academy, I discovered that these tools can also be used to learn, start a business, and innovate. This experience opened my eyes to the many opportunities offered by the digital world.” Judith, another participant, added: “This program gave me confidence in my ability to succeed in the digital universe and seize the opportunities it provides.”
The MTN Skills Academy reflects the company’s commitment to digital inclusion and bridging the digital divide in Cameroon. According to Melvin Akam, General Manager of Regulatory & Corporate Affairs at MTN Cameroon: “Access to digital skills is a crucial lever for economic and social development in our communities.”
Beyond skill acquisition, the program fosters entrepreneurial spirit and innovation among young people. By strengthening employability and mastery of digital tools, it opens new opportunities in key economic sectors, from e-commerce to cybersecurity, digital marketing, and project management.
The success of this initiative confirms the importance of public-private partnerships in supporting African youth in their transition to an inclusive and competitive digital economy. By training local talent, MTN Cameroon and the University of Dschang are helping to prepare a generation capable of tackling the challenges of digital innovation and stimulating the country’s socio-economic development.
