(LVDE) – In response to allegations of sexual violence on its plantations, the Société Camerounaise des Palmeraies (Socapalm), under the leadership of Frédéric Augé, is implementing strong and immediate actions to combat this scourge, which undermines both social dialogue and the company’s overall performance.
Amid an alarming situation marked by repeated accusations of sexual violence, the Société Camerounaise des Palmeraies (Socapalm) has taken bold steps to eradicate the problem. Since May 2025, when Frédéric Augé assumed leadership of the company, firm measures have been introduced to improve a situation that, according to reports from NGOs and civil society, has severely violated the rights of women—both employees and those living near the plantations.
Testimonies reveal a grim reality where women endure abuses ranging from harassment to rape, fueled by a culture of impunity. Women living near the plantations report being assaulted while crossing plantation fields during their daily activities. Female employees also recount that some supervisors do not hesitate to withhold wages unless they receive sexual favors. Security guards have likewise been accused of demanding “favors” in exchange for passage through secured areas.
These acts of violence are not isolated; they are part of a broader context of insecurity, land grabbing, and tensions between local communities and the company. In Edéa, the Afrise (Association des Femmes Riveraines de Socapalm-Édéa) is actively fighting these abuses by organizing petitions to reclaim land and end the violence. The association denounces the use of sexual violence as a tool of intimidation aimed at silencing dissent.

To address the accusations, Socapalm is adopting a proactive approach inspired by initiatives introduced by its parent company, Socfin. The company has developed corrective action plans that include the creation of gender committees responsible for handling harassment cases, supporting victims, and ensuring follow-up of reports. An anonymous hotline has also been established, enabling victims to safely report abuses. Additionally, the company is offering psychological support to victims to help them through these difficult times.
Strict internal sanctions will be applied in cases of proven abuse, with enhanced transparency through the publication of quarterly assessments on Socfin’s website. Céline Schmitz, Sustainability Coordinator, emphasizes that the company has zero tolerance for violence, noting that potential offenders must understand that impunity is not an option.
In an effort to continuously improve its processes, the company has commissioned the Earthworm Foundation to investigate the situation and provide recommendations. The outcomes of these initiatives will be systematically evaluated and made available to the public to ensure full accountability in the fight against sexual violence.
Through this approach, the Société Camerounaise des Palmeraies (Socapalm) is committed to transforming its work environment into a space of respect and safety, contributing to the broader goal of safeguarding the well-being of all.
