(LVDE) – A 10,000-liter-capacity solar-powered water facility has been recently inaugurated in Babenga, Dibombari Subdivision, Littoral Region, by Olam Agri. This initiative aims to improve access to clean drinking water for the local population.
The motorized, solar-powered well is part of the company’s broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability efforts. The project, dubbed “Eau Saine” (“Clean Water”), addresses the urgent need for safe drinking water — a critical issue in rural areas such as Babenga.
The inauguration brought immense joy to residents, who view this initiative as a direct solution to their long-standing water supply challenges. Before the project, the community faced serious health problems caused by contaminated water, leading to diseases such as diarrhea. The new facility is expected to significantly reduce the time and effort required to collect water, bringing much-needed relief.
To ensure the project’s sustainability, Olam Agri established a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Committee (Washcom), which will play a key role in managing and maintaining the well. Local mechanics have also been trained to ensure proper operation, reinforcing the community’s self-sufficiency.
Ekambi Ekambi Emile, representing the heads of households, expressed his gratitude : “We have suffered for a long time because of poor water quality. With this pump, we finally have a precious source of clean water that will improve our daily lives.”
Derefaka Derefaka, CSR Project Associate at Olam Agri, emphasized the importance of clean water access : “This project aims to ensure access to safe drinking water. It is vital for the well-being of our rural communities, especially women and children, who are traditionally responsible for fetching water.”
Ashu Ma-Mbeng Success, Olam Agri’s Communications and Sustainability Manager in Cameroon, added : “Water is life. Thanks to this project, the people of Babenga can look forward to a better life with fewer water-related health issues.”
The construction of the well was carried out by Roots Suits & Empower, while Maison ADA handled the water treatment process, ensuring its potability.
This initiative has already begun to transform the lives of Babenga’s families, improving their health and overall quality of life. With access to clean water, residents can now focus on income-generating activities, contributing to the region’s economic growth.
Through this project, Olam Agri reaffirms its commitment to sustainable solutions that address the fundamental needs of rural communities. By investing in essential infrastructure, the company is contributing to public health, economic development, and social well-being in this part of Cameroon. Esther Grace
