(LVDE) – The 22nd “Digital House,” an initiative by mobile operator Orange Cameroon aimed at promoting women’s empowerment through digital technology, was officially handed over to beneficiaries during a ceremony held in Buea on August 20, 2025.
The inauguration of the “Digital House” in Buea marks a milestone for women in the region, symbolizing a strong commitment to their empowerment. The event, attended by local authorities and partners of the Orange Foundation, was hailed as a significant step forward for women aspiring to play an active role in the local economy. Representing the Governor, Vanessa Mbong Mbembe emphasized the importance of this initiative in supporting women on their path to independence.
Leading the Orange Cameroon delegation, Alain-Blaise Batongue, Director of Institutional Affairs, stressed that training and mastering digital tools are essential for enabling women to become true drivers of development. The training programs, lasting from six months to a year, aim to transform vulnerable women into entrepreneurs capable of generating income on their own.
Lucia Ediage Sona, Regional Delegate of the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, stated that the “Digital House” is a space for exchange and learning that strengthens women’s capacities through digital technology education. She underlined the importance of training in harnessing the opportunities of an increasingly interconnected world.
The “Digital House” program, launched by Orange in collaboration with the government, is focused on inclusion and empowerment. In Buea, thousands of women will benefit from courses in computer literacy, financial management, and other digital skills. Upon completing their training, participants will be equipped to start or expand their own businesses.
The “Digital House” is integrated into the Women and Family Promotion Center, where women’s associations will play a key role in supporting beneficiaries. Each association will receive a grant to organize training sessions, ensuring effective follow-up and guidance. This partnership is critical to guaranteeing proper adoption of the skills acquired.
Through this program, the Orange Foundation positions itself as a major player in Cameroon’s digital transformation. The project—covering IT equipment and hands-on training—demonstrates Orange’s commitment to supporting the development of a sustainable digital economy.
Alain-Blaise Batongue noted that training women in the South-West is vital for regional development. By building digital awareness, women will be better prepared to interact with their environment, paving the way for new business sectors to emerge. With nearly 400 million FCFA invested in the program, the results are promising: many trained women have already launched their own initiatives, a clear sign of the project’s success.
